The Seymour baseball team backed Jayden Brown’s excellent pitching performance with a big offensive performance to defeat Jennings County 9-0 Friday at American legion Field.

Brown held the Panthers hitless through six innings before pinch-hitter Owen Deaton hit a line drive to left field for a single leading off the seventh inning.

Coach Jeremy Richey then took Brown out of the game with Tiller Cummings finishing up on the mound.

Brown, a sophomore right-hander, struck out four and walked four.

“We were hoping to get about four or five out of him,” Richey said. “With the no-hitter going we extended him a little bit because we’ve got plans for next week. He pitched a great game.

“The best part about it is he keeps getting better. There’s more in there than that. He got a little wild there and walked some guys. He’s going to clean that up because he keeps getting better and he’s competing.

“As good as he was, our expectations is he’s going to keep getting better. He mixed it up well. When he throws his curve ball for a strike, that fastball becomes more effective because he throws it pretty well with that difference in speed.”

The Owls opened a 7-0 lead after four innings.

In the bottom of the first, with two outs and nobody on base, Alan

Perry hit the ball past the third baseman. The ball slowed down on the grass and Perry hustled into second with a double.

Seth Maki hit a line drive right at the right fielder, who was looking right into the sun and was unable to hang onto the ball and Perry scored.

Michael Knecht singled in the second inning, he went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on Ty McCory’s ground out to second.

Maki walked in the third and scored on A.J. Boshears’ home run over the fence in left field. It was the Owls’ first home run of the season.

RJ Kleber was safe on a two-base error leading off the fourth inning. McCory was hit by a pitch and was replaced by courtesy runner Scott Nieves at first base. Kleber scored on a wild pitch, Nieves scored on a single by Boshers. Perry walked and later scored on an error.

The Owls added two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Maki led off with a single, Matt Moore walked, Knecht hit into a fielder’s choice, and Maki and Knecht scored on a hit by Brown.

The Owls finished with 10 hits, with Boshers getting three to go along with three RBIs and he scored two run, Brown had two hits and Knecht and Perry both scored two runs.

Richey said he was impressed with the 10 hits.

“We left Madison the other night feeling like we were really close,” he said. “We were better the other night, our bats were better, and we came out and got three or four hits in the first two innings today and that kind of got things going.

“A.J.’s big home run really got us going because that was a big shot at the right time to kind of extend the lead and give some breathing room.

“It’s coming. We knew it was there. It was a rough start. I think the weather had something to do with that, but we knew we would be a pretty good offensive team and we’re starting to get where we think we should be.”

The Owls (5-2) will host Clarksville today for a doubleheader.
