An 89-year-old Jackson County man died Saturday evening in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 31, south of Seymour.

Herbert Hollin of Crothersville died at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour where he was taken after being treated at the scene by medical personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services, according to a report from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Versailles State Police Post.

A passenger in Holland’s vehicle, Fern Hollin, 83, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Schneck Medical Center before being flown to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, said Wheeles, who is the post’s public information officer.

According to Trooper Michael Thiron’s initial investigation, Hollin was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier south on U.S. 31 near County Road 275N when he crossed the center line into the path of a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer being driven north by Jeffrey Haag, 58, of Seymour.

Haag was taken to Schneck by family members for treatment of his injuries, while a front seat passenger in his vehicle, Sheila Haag, 54, was taken to a hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of serious injuries, Wheeles said.

U.S 31 was closed for about an hour for the investigation and clean up of the wreck, reported shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday, Thiron reported.

He said police do not believe alcohol or drugs where a factor in the wreck, but a Herbert Holland may have crossed the center line because of a medical condition.

Officers with the Jackson County Sheriff’s and Seymour police departments assisted along with firefighters from Seymour Fire Department, personnel with Stat Flight and C&C Towing.

Updated at 2:44 p.m. Sunday to correct the spelling of Herbert Hollin’s last name.
