Seymour and Brownstown Central are both sending athletes to the big show again in 2018.

The girls track and field teams competed at the Bloomington North Regional on Tuesday, which presented the opportunity to advance to next week’s state finals.

Top-three finishes automatically qualified athletes for the state championships at Indiana University on June 1, and the top-eight scored team points.

Thirty-eight different schools were represented at the regional meet.

Bloomington South won with 94 points. They defeated crosstown rival Bloomington North by two points. Seymour scored 29 points for seventh place, and Brownstown Central had 11 points for 19th of the 33 teams that scored.

Seymour’s night couldn’t have gotten off to a much better start.

In the 4×800 relay, the Owls not only finished third at regional to advance to the state meet but also set a new school record.

Seniors Claire Loebker and Abby Voss, junior Ashton Chase and sophomore Makenna Sunbury combined for 9 minutes, 44.74 seconds to kick off the meet.

It will be the first state meet for the Owls’ seniors.

“I knew that we could do it,” Voss said. “These are a strong group of girls. I can see their hard work in practice. I didn’t really have a doubt that we wouldn’t push through. It means a lot to finally make it.”

Brownstown Central junior Brooklyn Snodgrass will make a third straight trip to IU in the 100-meter dash. Snodgrass clocked 12.61 for third place in the event.

“I felt a little more pressure this time,” Snodgrass said. “I’ve gone two straight years in a row and really wanted to make it three. My mom and dad are huge supporters. I wanted to get it for myself and everyone around me. I feel like I ran well. I got a good start out of the blocks.”

Later in the meet, Chase got out of the 1,600 by placing third in 5:13.99. It’s her second straight year moving on in the event. Voss timed 5:38.33 for ninth in the mile.

“It’s an honor (to advance in the relay). They’re my family,” Chase said. “We have a great bond with each other. In the mile, I felt like I kept a really good pace this year. I finished strong and felt pretty good.”

Kristen Stuckwisch clocked 1:02.16 to place sixth in the 400 for the Braves.

In the discus, Paige Kestler tossed 130 feet, 5 inches for fifth place, while BC’s Grace Jaynes finished ninth at 107-5.

Sunbury clocked 12:03.93 for fifth place in the 3,200.

Brownstown’s Ashley Schroer tossed 37-7 1/2 for seventh in the shot, and Kestler was 14th at 33-1.

Lara Skaggs of Seymour placed 10th in the 100 hurdles (17.03), 13th for the high jump (4-10) and fourth in long jump 16-0 1/4. Jessica Blevins was 13th in the long jump at 15-3 1/2.

Kaleigh Maschino clocked 28.61 for 14th in the 200, and Jalen Snider was 15th in 29.13 for the Owls.

Brownstown Central’s 4×800 relay team placed 14th overall in 11:07.89.

Seymour placed 12th in the 4×100 in 53.20, and Brownstown Central finished 15th in 54.26.

In the night’s final event, the 4×400 relay, Seymour was 12th in 4:22.94, and Brownstown got 14th in 4:34.73.

Braves coach Maria Conklin felt the team had a good day.

“Overall, we did pretty well,” she said. “Brooklyn, we kind of expected it at this point. She ran a good race. Kristen ran a great race in the 400. Grace Jaynes got into the finals of discus, and I was happy about that . Ashley Schroer had a two-foot personal record in the shot put, so I’m expecting big things from her in the future.”

Seymour coach Spencer Sunbury said he was proud of the state qualifiers and felt the team had a successful meet as a whole.
