Several recent controlled purchases led to a string of arrests involving methamphetamine dealers, police report.

The latest arrest occurred Thursday and involved Russell Darnell Alcorn, 40, of Seymour, according to Seymour police.

Lt. John Watson and Cpl. Adam Surface arrested Alcorn on a Level 2 felony charge of dealing methamphetamine and two Level 4 felony charges of dealing methamphetamine. His arrest occurred without incident at his home in the 200 block of Marley Lane near Margaret R. Brown Elementary School.

Officer Mike Henley, a narcotics detective, said the controlled purchase occurred while students were at school, which led to higher felony counts. He said a Level 2 felony is the highest charge available for dealing methamphetamine.

“He was within 500 feet of a school. The school is always an enhancement when children are there,” he said.

The amount of methamphetamine Alcorn sold led to the higher charges, too, police said. Alcorn sold between 5 and 10 grams on one occasion, leading to the Level 2 felony charge. The Level 4 felony counts stem from two sales of between 1 and 5 grams, police said.

He was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 2:26 p.m. Thursday and was being held without bond pending his initial hearing.

On Wednesday, Surface arrested Veronica Paige Marin, 31, of Seymour on three Level 5 felony charges of dealing methamphetamine after three controlled purchases. She also faces a Level 6 felony charge of possession of methamphetamine and a Class A misdemeanor charge of possession of paraphernalia.

She was booked into jail at 11:13 a.m. Wednesday without bond pending her initial hearing.

Police also arrested Hugh Allen Reynolds, 41, of North Vernon on Monday on three Level 5 felony charges of dealing methamphetamine after conducting three controlled purchases.

Police also requested a Level 6 felony charge of visiting/maintaining a common nuisance and a Class A misdemeanor charge of possession of paraphernalia against Reynolds.

The incident that led to his arrest began when police received a confidential tip that methamphetamine could be bought from Reynolds.

Police then arranged three purchases of less than 1 gram of methamphetamine from Reynolds.

Officer Ben Miller arrested Reynolds in a room at a motel on the city’s east side. He was booked into jail at 10:23 p.m. Monday without bond pending his initial hearing.

The three arrests are not related but just happened to occur around the same time, Henley said.

Police continue to investigate other cases, and more arrests are expected, said Seymour Officer Mathew Carver, who also is a narcotics detective.

In a fourth incident involving methamphetamine, Keslie Jeanettelace Cummings, 27, of Seymour turned herself in Monday on a failure to appear in court warrant issued in April 2017.

Cummings originally was arrested on two Level 5 felony counts of dealing methamphetamine on April 26, 2015, by Seymour police. She was booked into jail at 10:32 a.m. Monday without bond.
