Police continued Friday to investigate the death of an 8-year-old boy in the Crothersville area.

The child was found not breathing and unresponsive at his grandparents’ home at 9731 E. County Road 800S on Thursday afternoon.

Officers with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene at 1:47 p.m. and administered CPR, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers said.

Police declined to discuss any details of the investigation, but Carothers said officers are conducting interviews and awaiting results from an autopsy at Schneck Medical Center. That autopsy began after noon Friday, Carothers said.

“Right now, it’s a death investigation,” he said. “We will see what comes out of the investigation.”

Carothers said he was not aware of the boy having any medical conditions. He had been staying with his grandparents.

The boy spent the night with his father, Curtis Gilbert Collman Jr., 41, at his Seymour home, where he had moved to Wednesday night.

The two arrived at the Crothersville home around 1 p.m. Thursday, Carothers said.

He said he thought Collman had custody of the child.

Collman was arrested Thursday evening on a charge of failing to register as a sex offender. That charge stems from his conviction on a Class D felony charge of sexual misconduct with a minor in 2006 in Jackson Circuit Court.

Collman was sentenced to six years in prison on that charge Sept. 28, 2006. He was released Aug. 13, 2009, after serving nearly three years of the sentence.

He was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 8:03 p.m. Thursday without bond pending his initial hearing.
