Man held at jail on ICE warrant

The arrest of a Seymour man Friday led to the discovery that he was in the United States illegally, police report.

The incident began with the arrest of 19-year-old Miguel Felipe Gaspar by Crothersville Police Chief Brent Turner for operating while never having received a driver’s license.

During the book-in process at the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown, jailers were able to determine Gasper was in the country illegally through the use of electronic thumbprint technology.

Gasper’s arrest began after Turner conducted a traffic stop in response to Gasper’s failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. That occurred as the Indiana State Police were assisting an oversized load on U.S. 31 near Cindy Lane.

Gaspar first identified himself as Leo Rodry and during an interview later gave a different name and date of birth, Turner said.

During the book-in process, Turner told Jail Commander Charlie Murphy he was uncertain of Gaspar’s identity so police used electronic thumbprint technology. The software determined Gaspar was here illegally with an active fugitive warrant with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The warrant was issued after Gaspar failed to appear at an ICE court in connection with another traffic violation without receiving a driver’s license, police said.

That incident occurred in Seymour, Jail Officer Brad Freeman said, but a copy of the warrant was not available at press time and it’s unclear when that incident occurred.

Gaspar faces Class A misdemeanors of false reporting and operating while never having received a driver’s license. Federal immigration authorities will take custody of Gaspar following the conclusion of his cases with Jackson County Superior Court I. He was booked into Jackson County Jail at 12:30 p.m. and was being held on a $705 bond.

Turner and Murphy were assisted by jail officers Freeman and Faron Gibson.
