Second Taco Bell location planned in Seymour

A second Taco Bell location is planned for the city’s east side.

Clint Smith, owner of C&M Smith Restaurants based in Sellersburg, is the franchisee and said the site of the second location is expected to be in the 400 block of Stevens Way, west of the Circle K convenience store.

The restaurant will be housed in a 2,530-square-foot-building, according to a project application filed with the state.

Smith, who owns the city’s other Taco Bell at 1509 E. Tipton St., said he expects the second location to serve more customers traveling on Interstate 65, U.S. 31 and U.S. 50.

He said the McDonald’s on the city’s east side does well because it’s near a high-traffic area by the interstate.

“I have a number of stores that I call interstate locations, which is what this one will be because of how close it is to Interstate 65,” he said, adding he owns 23 locations throughout Indiana, including restaurants in Scottsburg, North Vernon and Salem, and Kentucky. “It’s easy to get off the interstate and get back on.”

Construction isn’t expected to begin until February or March 2019. Smith said he expects the restaurant to open in the late spring.

Smith does not yet own the property and said his efforts in 2018 are to secure the property.

He expects to hire 40 to 45 employees to run the location with eight serving as managers.

“We’ve been looking for a second location in Seymour for some time,” he said. “Our current restaurant does well, and it will continue to do well, so this is a good time to get the second location open.”

Smith opened his first location in Seymour on Dec. 27, 1988, on the southwest corner of Village Center. The original building was torn down in 2009, and a 3,112-square-foot building was reconstructed in its place along with 10-by-12-foot utility shed.
