One of Reins to Recovery Inc. Therapeutic Riding Center’s events is celebrating a milestone.

The 10th annual fundraiser is set for 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds in Columbus.

The center’s largest moneymaker features dinner and live and silent auctions. Admission is free, but freewill donations will be accepted for the dinner.

Food will be served starting at 4 p.m. The menu will include pork barbecue, potato salad, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, desserts and drinks.

The silent auction will run from 4 to 6 p.m., and Roger Dierckman of Holton will lead the live auction at 6 p.m. He has been the auctioneer every year.

Auction items include resort packages, restaurant gift cards, paintball packages, tools, hotel vouchers, tickets to water parks, amusement parks, comedy clubs, dinner theaters and sporting events and more.

“We have lots of items,” said Kristye Lewis, chairwoman of Reins to Recovery’s fundraising committee. “Just come and spend some money. That would be nice.”

Money raised will help the nonprofit organization gain most of its operating funds to support its programs, including therapeutic riding, equine-assisted psychotherapy and equine-assisted learning for children and adults with disabilities, victims of violence and at-risk youth.

“It’s the biggest fundraiser,” Lewis said. “It keeps our horses fed. You’ve got to keep them fed, the vet bills, the farrier every six weeks. It’s just taking care of our horses so they can take care of our clients.”

The facility along U.S. 31 just north of Reddington has nine horses and three miniature horses.

“They eat a lot,” Lewis said, smiling.

Since Reins to Recovery opened its doors in 2008 near Seymour, an annual fundraiser has been conducted in the summer. It draws nearly 200 people and brings in between $10,000 and $12,000.

Lewis said the only change to this year’s annual fundraiser is there will not be a performance by Justin the Artistic Horse. His owner, Adonna Combs, has another commitment Saturday.

Other upcoming events for Reins to Recovery include attending the Indiana High School and Indiana Junior High School Rodeo on Aug. 25 at the Jackson County Fairgrounds in Brownstown, participating in the Seymour Oktoberfest parade Oct. 6 and hosting the fun show Oct. 20.
