NORTH VERNON

A segment of the U.S. 50 bypass in north Vernon will be named the “Officer Anthony Burton and Reserve Officer Lonnie Howard Memorial Highway.”

The presentation of designating the roadway will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday when memorial signage will be unveiled as state officials read a Indiana House resolution in ceremonies in the south parking lot of Lord of Life Lutheran Church.

The church is located at 3300 N. State Road 3 along the U.S. 50 Bypass near where the two North Vernon law enforcement officers were killed in 1993 when their patrol car was struck by a vehicle driven by 30-year-old Jonathan E. Warnell of North Vernon

Warnell, who was charged with two counts of murder after that incident on State Road 3 near North Vernon, was found dead of an apparent suicide on the morning of May 13, 1993, in a cell at the Indiana Department of Correction’s Reception Diagnostic Center in Plainfield.
