A 19-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon after he was involved in a two-vehicle crash near Scipio in northwestern Jennings County.

Dalton Rinker of North Vernon was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, reported at about 4 p.m. at State Road 7 and County Road 500N, by an official with the Jennings County Coroner’s Office.

The wreck occurred when Rinker pulled the 1993 Oldsmobile passenger car he was driving east on County Road 500N into the path of a 2018 Freightliner semitrailer being driven south on State Road 7 by Leonel Guillen, 39, of Indianapolis, according to a news release from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police Versailles Post.

Wheeles, the post’s public information officer, said Guillen was not injured in the crash, which was investigated by Trooper Jacob Tolle and the post’s crash reconstruction team.

Police continue to investigate the wreck and why Rinker pulled in front of the semitrailer.

State Road 7 was closed for nearly two hours for investigation and cleanup of the wreck.

Officers with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department investigated the wreck. Firefighters and medical personnel with Scipio/Geneva Township Fire Department and medical personnel with Jennings County Rescue 20 assisted at the scene.
