A 44-year-old Seymour man was arrested Monday afternoon in the Reddington area for the murder of a 19-year-old woman, police report.

Brian Michael Cogdill was arrested without incident at a home off U.S. 31 in the 10000 block of East County Road 800N, north of Seymour, Sheriff Michael Carothers said.

Cogdill is charged in connection with the death of Emma Jean Jamison who was living in Seymour, but from Lebanon, Carothers said.

He said the murder took place Thursday at a residence near the East Fork White River south of the Indiana-American Water Co.

Circumstances of her death were not released and police continue to investigate the incident, Carothers said.

“We’re still working on that part of it,” Carothers said. He did not know whether the Cogdill and Jamison were in a relationship, but police believe they were at some point.

Jackson County Detective Tom Barker is leading the investigation and has conducted three interviews and is completing paperwork to submit to the Jackson County Prosecutors Office, Carothers said.

“We’re trying to get everything in line on it,” he said.

Police surrounded the home where Cogdill was arrested shortly after 3 p.m. Monday, and police spoke with him over the phone to get him to come out of the home, according to scanner traffic.

Cogdill was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 4:18 p.m. without bond pending his initial hearing in Jackson Circuit Court. Murder is punishable by 45 to 65 years in prison upon conviction. The advisory sentence is 55 years.

According to Jamison’s obituary from Myers Mortuary in Lebanon, she worked at Hardees in Seymour and was the daughter of Shelley M. Jamison, who also lives in Seymour. Emma Jamison’s sister, Erin Marie Bradshaw, lives in Seymour, and Emma also is survived by three brothers, Joseph (Becky) White of Crocker, Missouri; Joshua (Mickie) White of Tangier and Brandon (Samantha) Jamison of Lebanon.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
