BEDFORD

While both squads didn’t get out, the Seymour and Brownstown Central girls golf teams will each be represented in Washington Regional play this weekend at Country Oaks Golf Club in Montgomery.

Seymour finished runner-up at the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional, hosted by Otis Park Golf Course, on Saturday, as a team — by shooting 370 strokes — while the Braves’ Ashlyn Fox and KaCee Collins qualified for the second round of the postseason as individuals.

The top three teams and next three lowest individual scores on non-advancing teams qualified for regional.

BNL won the five-team sectional by shooting 322. Seymour, Springs Valley (417), Brownstown Central (452) and Paoli (479) followed. Salem and Orleans didn’t field full teams.

The Stars’ Taylor Norman had the lowest score on the day, recording an even-par 72 strokes for medalist honors.

Coming off a second-place finish in the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament, Bridget Marshall led Seymour by shooting an 80 at sectional. She tied for third place individually.

Laken Waskom (94), Madeleine Wisler (92), Kara Rice (104) and Lexi York completed the Owls’ scorecard.

“The girls played awesome,” Owls coach Jim Hoffman said. “This is always kind of a tough course for us with the elevation changes and the greens. We cut 22 strokes off what we did here earlier in the year. The girls just held it together. They had some bad holes but kept fighting.”

Saturday will mark the third straight year the Owls have advanced to the regional as a team.

“The girls are hitting the ball well, and they’re having fun,” Hoffman said. “It has been a great week for us. We’re going to get back to work (today). Our goal all season long has been to (move on from regional) and go to state. It is within our grasp.

“We’ve knocked off little strokes here and there. We need to work on putting. Putting probably cost us 15 strokes today.”

The three individuals moving on to regional were Orleans’ Brooklyn Cromwell (83), Collins (105) and Fox (106).

“Ashlyn played really well,” Brownstown coach Brandon Allman said.  “She hit the ball better today than she probably ever has. This was her low score. If she had putted well today, she probably would have been around 95 or so. I am extremely proud of her. That is the best golf she has played over the last two years.

“KaCee was just able to plow through. I think she was able to calm her nerves after struggling early. She played some decent golf tonight.”

Both Collins and Fox are familiar with Country Oaks, as the two competed at the regional with the team last year.

“We expect to go down and enjoy the moment. But don’t take it the wrong way, it’s not just us being happy that we are there,” Allman said. “We will need to take some chances. There will be some good programs down there. We just need to have fun and play the best we can.”

Lexi Satterthwaite (122), Ashley Schroer (121) and Payton Ault (120) completed their seasons for BCHS at sectional.

The Braves had 11 girls on the team this year, but Collins is the only senior.

“There was a lot of learning for (the team) and I,” Allman said. “I know several of them have an itch to keep playing. Hopefully, as a team, we will be able to step forward next year.”

Eighteen teams will make up the regional. Regional play will commence at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
