Library focuses on Banned Books Week

The Jackson County Public Library will turn the spotlight on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books this coming week.

The purpose of the celebration is to draw national attention to the harms of censorship.

The week, which begins Sunday and ends Sept. 30, is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read.

While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the celebration is the fact that in a majority of cases, the books have remained available, according to a news release from Jackson County Public Library. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read.

There will be special displays featuring the reason behind some of the most frequently challenged books at all Jackson County Public Library locations.
