An unseasonably hot October morning yielded times that were slower than usual for this time of year, but that didn’t stop the Seymour boys and girls and Brownstown Central girls from earning spots in the upcoming Brown County Regional.

The Owls finished second in the boys meet, and the Seymour and Brownstown girls finished third and fourth in Saturday’s Brown County Sectional at Eagle Park. The top five teams and the top 10 individuals on non-qualyfing teams earned regional berths.

Eleventh-ranked Columbus North won the boys meet with 26 points to 84 for the Owls. White River Valley (98), Martinsville (122) and Brown County (127) rounded out the top five.

“I thought we ran well,” Seymour boys coach Randy Fife said. “I thought we competed. Our effort was good, and at this point of the season, you’re looking more at place and effort and not so much about times. I think the boys are a little disappointed in their times, but that doesn’t really matter at this point because you’re moving on based on your place and your place is based on your effort.”

Luke Plummer led the Owls with a sixth-place finish in 17 minutes, 22.66 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Brandon Kleber took 16th in 18:22.72, while Michael Proffer was 20th (18:41.46), Luke Bane 22nd (18:52.82) and Luke Hauersperger 27th (19:05.27).

Trinity Lutheran’s AJ Goecker captured the top individual qualifying spot by finishing fourth in 17:17.80.

“I tried starting out kind of slower and improving on my pace,” Goecker said. “I think it was a slow course with all the mud and how hot it was. I was only practicing two or three times a week with soccer games and practices, so it’s really nice to get a full week of practice.”

Brownstown finished sixth with 137 points, 10 points out of fifth, but three Braves advanced as individuals. Mason Kellogg was 15th (18:21.29), Nathan Koch 29th (19:10.69) and Trey Hackman 33rd (19:29.04).

Meanwhile, the No. 16 North girls won with 20 points to 63 for Columbus East and 74 for Seymour, 112 for Brownstown and 126 for Martinsville.

Ashton Chase finished second in 20:11.46 to lead the Owls. North’s Olivia Morlok won in 19:40.00.

“That was my goal — to get second,” Chase said. “I knew coming in the times weren’t going to be that great. The course is kind of a sloppy mess.”

Also for Seymour, Grace Rennekamp finished 12th in 21:53.14. Lillian Sunbury took 19th in 22:23.89, while Samantha Jacobi was 23rd (22:56.22) and Brett Kleber 26th (23:20.30)

“We were hoping to be second or third coming in here,” Seymour girls coach Spencer Sunbury said. “We had a good weekend last weekend at (Hoosier Hills) conference, so we were hoping just to continue with that this week. We know next week is going to be a good challenge for us.”

Kaelyn Johnson led the Braves with a 15th-place finish in 22:07.44. Shauna Drake took 18th in 22:19.99, while Grace Garland was 28th (23:26.92), Emma Winks 31st (23:45.49) and Claire Poulton 33rd (23:50.60).

“It was a little hot, so the times weren’t quite we wanted them,” Brownstown coach Maria Conklin said. “But they competed and earned their place, and we knew we just wanted to move on to the next week.”

Trinity Lutheran had an individual qualify for regional. Sadie Nay finished 42nd in 25:23.06.
