Seymour girls golf holds season-ending awards program

Seymour girls golf coach Jim Hoffman would’ve given sportsmanship awards to all 10 of the girls on this year’s team if he could have.

He said that all season long, opposing teams asked if they could play with the Owls, and to Hoffman, that showed what a great group of golfers made up the team.

The Owls held their season-ending awards program at Shadowood Golf Course on Monday, celebrating the 2018 season.

Seymour went 41-26 overall, finishing runners-up in the sectional in Bedford’s Otis Park and tied for sixth in the regional in Montgomery at Country Oaks.

In the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament, at Shadowood, SHS placed third of eight teams.

Owls junior Bridget Marshall was All-HHC, tying for second with a 75, and also took home plaques for lowest stroke average for 9- and 18-hole play. Marshall had averages of 41.7 and 82.3. Marshall had three medalist finishes, Hoffman said.

Laken Waskom, a junior, was HHC honorable mention with an 84 that placed her seventh overall. Waskom had two medalist finishes, and had averages of 44 and 90 strokes.

The most improved award was presented to Kara Rice. Rice averaged near 120 strokes last year and dropped her average to 99.2 strokes this season. She also broke 100 and 90 strokes, both for the first time, this fall. In the regional, she finished her career with an 89.

The seniors, Rice, Madeleine Wisler and Lexi York, shared the Owl Award for sportsmanship.

Hoffman, who was in his first year of coaching the girls’ team, said that it was a great year overall.

He said that every player shot either a dual, or tournament, low score this season.
