Shields gymnasium fire remains under investigation

Police and fire officials continue to investigate the cause of a fire late Sunday morning inside the long unused Shields gymnasium at Sixth and Pine streets in Seymour.

Battalion Chief John Kirby said the fire damaged a section of the bleachers in the gymnasium, which served as home of Owls from 1940 until 1970.

Kirby said when the first firefighters arrived at the scene, smoke was billowing out upper the windows of the gym, which held about 4,000, and it looked pretty serious.

Station 2 is located just across Park Street.

Firefighters were able to get into the building, which has no electricity or gas, and to put out the fire, They then began cutting out the area of bleachers that had burned to make sure the fire was out, Kirby said.

No injuries were reported.
