Vallonia man arrested in connection with death investigation

The arrest of a Washington County man on obstruction and failure to report a dead body charges Friday led to the discovery of the body of a man reported missing earlier in the day.

The arrest of Jerry Lee Carson Jr., 47, who lives in the Vallonia area in northern Washington County, occurred after police questioned him during their search for 22-year-old Jacob Ray Dodson on Friday, according to a report from Sgt. Jerry Goodin.

Goodin, public information officer for the Indiana State Police Sellersburg Post, said the body of Dodson, who lived in the Campbellsburg area, was found Friday in a duffel-style bag under an abandoned mobile home on property at 4301 Wheeler Hollow Road, Vallonia.

Police went to that address after gathering enough information to obtain a search warrant, Goodin said.

An autopsy performed on the body Sunday in Washington County did not reveal any signs of trauma, Goodin said Sunday.

“The cause of death is unknown at this time,” he said.

Toxicology test results, however, are pending and usually take up to six to eight weeks to return, he said.

Dodson, who was reported missing Friday morning by a family member, was allegedly last seen alive Oct. 20 in Washington County, Goodin said.

Officers with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department initially investigated the report of Dodson’s disappearance and later requested assistance from the state police, Goodin said.

Carson was booked into the Washington County Jail in Salem at 7:42 p.m. Friday and was being held on $4,000 bond.
