Seymour football holds awards banquet

The Seymour High School football program concluded its 2018 season with an awards banquet at The Pines Evergreen Room on Wednesday.

Under second-year coach Mike Kelly, the Owls finished 6-4 overall in varsity competition.

The Owls had wins over South Dearborn, Jeffersonville, Floyd Central, Brownstown Central, Jennings County and Madison this fall. In Hoosier Hills Conference competition, the Owls took third by going 4-3.

At Bulleit Stadium, the Owls finished with a perfect 4-0 home record.

Senior Nathan O’Mara was name the offensive player of the year. The running back led the team with 1,986 yards on 286 carries and 12 touchdowns.

O’Mara broke the school record for rushing yards, and carries, in a game with 356 yards on 41 attempts against Jeffersonville. He also set the record for carries in a season and finished in second place for most yards in a season at SHS.

The defensive player of the year award was given to senior Devin Hill, who finished with 71 tackles (15 solo, 56 assists). The middle linebacker averaged seven tackles per game and had two sacks and forced a fumble.

Senior Caleb Madden received the lineman of the year award. Madden played on both sides of the ball for the Owls throughout the season. On defense, Madden totaled 79 tackles (19 solo, 60 assists). He averaged eight tackles per contest.

The special teams player of the year award went to senior long snapper Jack Roberts.

The most improved defensive player was senior defensive back Chase Miles and senior lineman Clayton Prater was the most improved offensive player.

A mental attitude award was given to senior defensive tackle Joseph Towriss.

Fifty-eight varsity letters were handed out on the evening. Nineteen seniors graduate from the Owls’ sectional roster.

The Owls’ junior varsity finished 5-4 and the freshman team had four wins.

At the conclusion of the program, Kelly told his team that they now need to find a way to move the needle. He challenged them to not be satisfied with this year’s results, and continue putting in time and effort into the program.
