Senior is glad he transferred to Medora

During his sophomore year at Mitchell High School Owen Sullivan decided a change of schools would be good for him, so he enrolled at Medora.

During his junior year he decided he wanted to play basketball, and says that was a good decision. He is in his second season starting for the Hornets.

“I just like being competitive and playing with the team,” he said.

Standing 6-1, he plays a wing position for the Hornets.

Sullivan, who is right-handed, enjoys shooting 3-point shots, and also likes driving to the basket.

“I get most of my points at the basket,” Sullivan said. “I like shooting 3s from the top of the key.”

Last season Sullivan averaged 11.8 points per game, scoring in double figures 17 times with high games of 18 points against Trinity Lutheran and Martinsville Tabernacle, and he scored 17 in three games, and he received four special awards during the awards program after the season.

In games, Sullivan prefers a fast pace on offense.

“Usually, whoever gets the rebound drives up and plays guard,” Sullivan said. “I would rather play against a zone. It’s easier to get open for shots against a zone defense. If the defense is in a zone we run a 1-3-1 offense, and if they are man we run spread and speedy.”

Sullivan said practice is important, and the team works against zone and man defenses.

“Practice is very important,” he said. “You play the way you practice. I try to work on attacking the rim, getting to the basket, and my ball handling.”

He said the team will play a lot of man in its half-court defense.

The Hornets lost their opener in overtime at Shawe Memorial last week, and Sullivan said teamwork and keeping a positive attitude are the keys to having a winning season.

“We just need to come out and play as hard as we can,” he said. “We’ve got to want to win. The desire is there. This will probably be one of the best seasons Medora has had in a while.”

The Hornets will play in the Southern Roads Conference Tournament Friday and Saturday at Dugger Union. Medora will play back-to-back pool games against Madison Christian and Cannelton, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“It will be really fun,” Sullivan said.
