Fliers promoting Republicans go out nearly a month after election

It’s been nearly a month since the 2018 general election, but political fliers are still being circulated locally.

It’s not because the Jackson County Republican Party decided to take a victory lap for sweeping county seats on election night or to get a head start on the 2022 election, but it seems to be a mistake at the U.S. Postal Service.

Local residents began receiving the mailers earlier this week featuring Republican candidates for county offices. The postage for the 4,970 flyers cost about $1,500, Jackson County Republican Chairwoman Amanda Lowery said.

“We work really hard to not make mistakes when we campaign, and this one is out of our hands, so it’s just frustrating,” she said.

The party uses Maple Leaf Printing of Goshen, Lowery said, and paperwork from that business shows mailers were dropped off at the Goshen post office on Oct. 26 to be mailed in a final blitz prior to the election. The business regularly does work for campaigns, even larger ones like the U.S. Senate, Lowery said.

Instead of voters receiving the mailers before the election, they started receiving them this week.

“They’re hitting people’s mailboxes like they should have hit before Nov. 6,” she said, adding she’s received about 30 calls from residents about the issue. Lowery herself even received the flier Wednesday.

Lowery’s sister, Sara Cunningham, who won election to the Redding Township Board, purchased 500 mailers to be sent ahead of the election, but the fliers didn’t go out until the week after.

“So we actually have two situations, only hers is a much smaller scale,” Lowery said.

Lowery said she reported the issue to the Brownstown post office, but has not heard from officials on what has caused the delay. She was told the postal service would look into the matter.

“This is something we don’t have control over and the printing company did everything right, but it seems to be an issue with the postal service,” Lowery said.
