Owls earn pair of wins over Panthers

Seymour ended the 2018 portion of its season on a high note Saturday with the Owls girls and boys each posting victories over Jennings County.

The Owls’ girls won 127-49, while the boys bested the Panthers 121-60.

The Seymour girls won 11 of 12 events on the morning.

August Hunt, Abby Boyt, Macy Taylor and Haley Williams started the day by winning the 200 medley relay in 2 minutes, 12.65 seconds.

Sandy Cerino won a pair of individual events, taking the 50 freestyle (27.63) and 100 free (1:01.76).

Marcegui Vasquez also won two, winning the 200 freestyle in 2:24.26 and 500 free in 5:57.77.

Maren McClure was first in both the 100 breaststroke (1:15.35) and 200 individual medley, (2:29.50) and Boyt won the 100 butterfly in 1:13.15.

In the diving well, Brett Kleber scored 96.30 for first.

Charisma Barnard, Cerino, Vasquez and Cerino combined for 1:56.50 to win the 200 free relay and 4:20.96 to win the 400 free relay.

The Owls boys recorded first places in six events.

Dillon Polley won the 50 free in 25.78, and his twin brother, Dalton, was first in the 500 freestyle in 5:19.59.

The Polleys, Daniel Hartman and Trevor Layne combined for 1:39.34 to win the 200 freestyle relay.

Layne also won the breaststroke (1:06.20), and Lee Freeman was first in the 100 backstroke (1:07.21)

Devin Ramsey’s score of 302.85 was the best for diving.

The Owls’ 400 freestyle relay team of the Polleys, Bryce Miller and Hartman combined for 3:38 to end the meet with a win.

Owls compete in Jeff Classic, have one individual champ

JEFFERSONVILLE

Seymour competed with 17 other teams in the annual Jeff Classic at Jeffersonville High School on Saturday.

The Red Devils won the competition with 229.5 points, Bloomington South was runner-up at 217.5 and Gibson Southern was third at 181.5. Seymour placed 11th overall at 75.5.

Owls senior Alejandro Sachinas was the tournament winner in the 195-pound class. Sachinas, who finished 4-0 on the day, beat Jeff’s Dylan Thompson by a 3-1 decision in the championship match.

Sam Castetter (113) and Gabe Ramirez (285) each finished sixth in their respective weight classes, while Ben Kristen (126), Jake Kristen (145) and Jacob Rotert (160) all finished seventh.

Braves extend winning streak

MITCHELL

The start of the 2018-19 season has been fast and furious for Brownstown Central.

The Braves stayed undefeated on the season Saturday by beating Mitchell 63-47.

The Braves led 22-8 after one quarter and 35-20 at half before putting away the game in the final 16 minutes.

Michael Boshears led the Braves with 24 poitns, and Isaac Johnson added 18.

Michael Bell topped Mitchell with 19 points on five 3-pointers.

Brownstown (6-0) will play Fort Wayne Blackhawk in the first round of the Graber Post Buildings Classic on Dec. 27.

Tigers add conference win

NEW WASHINGTON

Crothersville kept its Southern Athletic Conference record unblemished Saturday by recording a 57-51 win at New Washington.

The Tigers (5-1, 2-0 SAC) led by three points after eight minutes of play before adding 20 in the second quarter to lead 34-23 at half.

The Mustangs (1-7, 0-1 SAC) closed the deficit in the third quarter, but the Tigers led 41-40 going into the fourth.

In the final eight minutes, the Tigers added 16 points while holding the Mustangs to 11 to get the win.

Josh Thomas led the Tigers with 22 points on three made 3-pointers, and Logan Brewer chipped in 15.

Crothersville will play at Scottsburg in the first round of the Scott County Invitational on Friday.

Eagles fly past Cougars

OSGOOD

Jac-Cen-Del outscored Trinity Lutheran 36-28 in the second half to come away with a 62-55 win Saturday.

Trinity led 27-26 at the half before the Eagles outscored the Cougars by four points in each of the third and fourth quarters.

A.J. Goecker and Mitchell Hackman each had 13 points to lead the Cougars.

Trinity (2-7) will play Hauser Dec. 26 in the first round of the Edinburgh Holiday Tournament.
