Police seek help identifying woman involved in fatal incident

Authorities are asking the public to help identify a woman struck and killed Sunday evening on the city’s west side.

Seymour police said a white woman, estimated between 40 and 50 years old, was struck in the 600 block of Tipton Street near Lynn Street reported at 5:59 p.m.

Police have made efforts to identify the woman, police chief Bill Abbott said, but those attempts have been unsuccessful.

Abbott said the woman had medium-length red hair that is graying around the edges, and was wearing brown wire-framed glasses. She’s described as about 5’5 tall and weighing approximately 175 pounds.

He said the woman was wearing multiple layers of clothing including a heavy-weight maroon winter coat and blueish windbreaker pants worn over sweatpants. She had no tattoos.

The amount of clothing the woman was wearing could indicate she was homeless or had little source of heating, Abbott said.

“That’s not confirmed, but it’s a possibility,” he said. Abbott said officers have seen the woman on the west end of town before but she had not been involved in any incidents known to police.

An autopsy was conducted Monday morning at Schneck Medical Center. Authorities hope to have more answers from that report after that occurs, Abbott said.

He said two witnesses, other than the driver, said the woman had been walking north of Tipton Street on the sidewalk and stepped into the right, westbound lane of Tipton Street. The driver struck her shortly after she stepped into the roadway.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner Roger Wheeler, Abbott said.

Police have not released the name of the driver at this time.

“The driver has been fully cooperative,” Abbott said.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the prosecutor’s office, which is how every death investigation is handled.

“There’s no charges right now and that’s normal protocol (to submit case to the prosecutor),” Abbott said.

Anyone with information on the woman’s identity should call the Seymour Police Department at 812-522-1234.
