Customers with an adjusted gross income of $66,000 or less in 2018 may be eligible to file both state and federal taxes at no cost with the Indiana Department of Revenue’s free file program.

“Nearly 2 million Hoosiers qualified to use INfreefile in 2018, but less than 90,000 took advantage of this no-cost filing option,” said Adam Krupp, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Revenue.

The goal for 2019 is to ensure more qualifying Hoosiers are aware of the program in the hope they participate, he said.

INfreefile is in its 16th year of offering free online tax filing services to Hoosiers, using the same electronic question-and-answer style vendor software most customers pay to use.

Krupp said electronically filed returns have a 2 percent error rate versus a 20 percent error rate for paper-filed returns. Filing electronically also results in faster refunds with customers typically getting their refunds in about two to three weeks. Those who opt for direct deposit of their refunds may receive their refunds even faster.

Participating vendors include FreeTaxUSA, H&R Block, OLT Online Taxes, Tax Act and Turbo Tax.

For access to the program along with a list of vendors, visit freefile.dor.in.gov. Those who have participated in the program in the past will need to create a new account to utilize INfreefile.
