Downtown pursuit nets arrest of man Tuesday morning

A Jefferson County man faces auto theft and resisting law enforcement charges after leading police on a brief chase early Tuesday morning in downtown Seymour.

The pursuit ended with the arrest of 37-year-old Eric Long near the old city police station at Third and Chestnut streets, Assistant Police Chief Craig Hayes said.

That’s where Long fled on foot after crashing a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu that had been reported stolen to the Scottsburg Police Department earlier in the morning, Hayes said.

“They (Scottsburg police) were still entering information about it,” he said.

A Scottsburg city employee, however, spotted someone driving the car east on Tipton Street in Seymour and reported it to Seymour dispatchers at 8:29 a.m.

Hayes said the driver of the Malibu turned north on Walnut Street and was spotted near Second Street by Officer Bart Bevers.

“And the chase was on,” he said.
