Braves hold season-ending awards banquet

The Brownstown Central High School girls basketball program concluded its season Tuesday with an awards program at the cafeteria.

The Braves’ varsity finished 16-9 during the 2018-19 season, including 4-5 in Mid-Southern Conference play. They defeated Charlestown and Scottsburg in the Class 3A Sectional 30 tournament before falling to Salem in the championship game.

As a team, the Braves set school records for most 3-point goals in a season (125) and lowest points average for opponents (42 percent).

Braves junior Ashley Schroer collected an armful of accolades on the night, including the most valuable player, highest field goal (48 percent) and most rebounds (173) awards. Schroer, who averaged 11 points per game, also was named to the All-MSC team.

Sophomore Katherine Benter also made the All-MSC squad and received the mental attitude and highest free throw percentage (75 percent) awards. Benter also was presented her letter jacket at the ceremony.

Braves senior Payton Farmer received the outstanding defense award and was named a Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association All-Star.

The most assists award went to Braves junior Halle Hehman, who finished with 67 dimes.

This past winter, Braves senior Tayler Garland broke the record for 3-pointers in a career. She finished her tenure with 113 total makes from distance.

Garland and fellow senior Claire Poulton were both named to the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Academic All-State list.

Farmer, Garland, Poulton, Shelby Reynolds and manager Maddie Huber graduate from the Braves’ program.

Braves coach Karla Rieckers wrapped up her 12th year of heading the program. Under Rieckers, the Braves have had 10 seasons where the team finished above .500.

Coach Lee Ann Borden’s junior varsity team finished with a record of 13-4 overall.

Freshman Kelsey Wischmeier was the JV most improved, and Hannah Stahl received the JV free throw award, shooting 64 percent from the stripe.
