County’s unemployment rate rises to 3.3 percent

Jackson County’s unemployment rose to 3.3 percent in January from 2.7 percent in December 2018, according to newest labor force estimates released Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The county’s estimated rate for January, however, was lower than all but five Hoosier counties. Dubois and Gibson counties had the lowest rate in the state at 3.0 in January, while the honors for the second-lowest rate (3.1 percent) went to Bartholomew, Boone and Hamilton counties.

Vermillion County had the highest unemployment rate at 6.8 percent. The state’s rate in January was 3.5 percent, while the nation’s rate was 4.4 percent.

According to the state, 768 people from a workforce of 23,046 were looking for work in January in Jackson County. In the same period a year earlier, 673 people from a workforce of 22,239 or 3.0 percent were looking for work.

Other counties in the region and their rates were Brown 3.9 percent; Jennings 4.7; Lawrence 4.5; Monroe 4.3; Scott 4.4; and Washington 4.4.
