The 25th annual Showdown of the Shields weightlifting competition between public safety officers is scheduled for May 18 at FairOaks Mall in Columbus.

The first eight teams, consisting of four to five members, to register will be allowed to compete, and each participant is being asked to raise $200, according to a news release from Tommy Walker.

Walker, a master trooper with the Indiana State Police, said the goal of this year’s event is to raise $10,000 to benefit the 16,000 athletes involved in Special Olympics Indiana, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The exercises the teams compete in are bench press, standing curls and leg extension, and contestants complete as many repetitions in one minute in each exercise according to the given percentage of their body weight.

Texas Roadhouse will once again provide lunch for participants and volunteers after the competition.

The deadline to register is May 4.
