Smokin’ Up the Town is set for today and Saturday near the Jackson County History Center campus at Walnut and Sugar streets in Brownstown.

The amateur barbecue competition will be run by Greg Lane with Kentuckiana BBQ Pitmasters and will be the third event in the Kentuckiana Backyard BBQ Series.

Individuals or teams consisting of people of all ages are being sought to compete. The cost to enter is $60.

The categories are brisket, chicken, pork ribs and pulled pork. Setup will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. today. Judging following the Kansas City Barbecue Society rules will be Saturday with awards presented at 4 p.m. The top three in each category will be recognized, and there will be an overall grand champion and a reserve grand champion.

Competitors also can enter the one-bite challenge for $5, and the winner will receive a plaque.

Starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, the public is invited to pay $5 to get a sample of all of the cooked meat and vote for the people’s choice award.

History center volunteers also will sell porkburger dinners starting at 10:30 a.m. today and Saturday. For $7, you will receive a porkburger or a hot dog, chips, a drink and a dessert. For just a porkburger, it’s $5.

Finally, there will be a raffle for a stainless steel Broil King 320 grill donated by Luecke Audio Video Appliances and Steve Silver from RE/MAX. Tickets will be one for $1, six for $5, 12 for $10 and 25 for $20.

Proceeds from the event will go to the history center.
