Seymour’s boys track and field team had some season-best performances in Friday night’s Hoosier Hills Conference meet, but it didn’t show in the team standings.

The Owls finished eighth. Floyd Central won with 167 ½, followed by New Albany (127), Bedford North Lawrence (79), Columbus East (67 ½), Jeffersonville (59), Jennings County (50), Madison (39) and Seymour (31).

“It’s a very tough conference as far as track and field goes,” Seymour coach Randy Fife said. “I was proud of the effort. It was not the finish that we wanted, but it’s where we are at.”

The Owls’ best finish was a second in the shot put from Haden Mettert, who threw 48 feet, ¼-inch. Josh Pennington took third in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.81 seconds.

Pennington, Cayton Bailiff, Eli Abner and Drew Schroeder finished fourth in the 4×100 relay (45.58). Caleb Madden took fifth in the discus (128-0); and Brady Westfall, Juan Silva, Isaac Shafer and Brycen Baugh were fifth in the 4×800 relay (8:47.78).

“We had some PRs tonight in some of our distance races,” Fife said. “We ran well, but we didn’t score a lot of points. We had some good times. We had some kids with some good PR splits. In our 4×800, our kids had the best splits. It was our best of the season time. We put some new guys in the 4×400 in the end of the meet.”

Seymour has turned its attention to the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The Owls host the girls track sectional at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“A lot of teams in our sectional we haven’t competed with during the year, so I don’t how they’re going to be,” Fife said. “We’ll get another week of practice in and do our best.”
