Seymour Museum Center is continuing to prepare for a visit by the Indiana Historical Society’s History on Wheels exhibit June 21 through 23.

The AutoIndiana mobile exhibit, free to the public, will let kids climb into the driver’s seat of a mini IndyCar. Adults can use a touchscreen to check under the hood of a model based on a 1914 Marmon touring car. All can see a history of motor vehicle development in Indiana.

Exhibits inside the museum at Chestnut and Third streets will include a history of local drag racing, the sport of hill climbing, vehicle-related inventions and manufacturing and other local transportation-related ventures.

Did you know the preteen sons of a local family drove thousands of miles cross country before Indiana even required driver’s licenses or set age limits more than 100 years ago? Do you have a local motoring-related story you want to share by emailing [email protected]?

The state-of-the-art traveling exhibit highlights the state’s automotive industry and car racing history. Visitors can even kick the tires of the tractor-trailer truck that carries the traveling exhibit with its expandable room of interactive displays.

The exhibit will open at noon each day, closing at 7 p.m. June 21 and 5 p.m. June 22 and 23. The early closing June 23 will allow visitors to attend the free evening concert that is part of the annual Cars and Guitars fundraiser that brings hot rods, muscle and modern cars, among others, to downtown Seymour streets for the day.

If you have questions or would like to help sponsor the exhibit, call Charlotte Sellers at 812-358-5649, mail a contribution to Seymour Museum Center, P.O. Box 1139, Seymour, IN 47274 or email [email protected].

You also can get a free 8.5-by-11 poster to display to remind people of the exhibit by emailing [email protected].

The History on Wheels traveling exhibit is supported by Lilly Endowment Inc., Jiffy Lube of Indiana and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and fueled by CountryMark.
