The 68th annual Clearspring School reunion was Aug. 25 at Brownstown Elementary School with 87 people, including former teachers and coaches, in attendance.

President Darrell Branaman welcomed the group for the pitch-in dinner.

Special recognition was given to the veterans present, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

The meeting was called to order, and a special thank-you was given to all who volunteered with setting up, decorating and helping serve the food and drinks.

Secretary-treasurer Rose Wray read the minutes and gave the treasurer’s report. Bill Combs then read a special tribute about Wray.

A candle was lit and Jim Cooper played soft music on his harmonica as the memorial roll of 22 names of students and teachers who had passed away this past year was read.

Special recognition was given to the 1969 graduating class, which is celebrating its 50th year. Class members present were Robert and Alberta Akin Aynes, Pat Brown, Cathy Clampitt Callahan, Terry and Linda Emily McDaniel and Ronald and Carolyn Hutchinson Speer.

Past cheerleaders who were present, Sue Curry Isaacs and Linda Fleetwood Helmbrecht, led the group in the school song. Past teachers and coach Frank Cummings and Larry Isaacs also were recognized.

An announcement was made about the annual Houston Fall Festival on Oct. 12.

Thomas and Ruth Fox received a potted plant for being the oldest couple present and having been married for 71 years. Linda Emily McDaniel from Virginia received a plant for traveling the farthest distance. Others receiving plants were Joe Gallion and Florence Sylvestor. Alberta Aynes received the grand door prize.

Jim Cooper and Dennis Campbell entertained the group with special music, and Cooper talked about the Clearspring band marching at the Indiana State Fair in 1959 and placing in the upper third of 90 bands.

The meeting was adjourned by all singing “God Be with You Until We Meet Again.”
