BROWNSTOWN

Two Brownstown Central Community School Corp. Students of the Month were recognized during Monday night’s board of trustees meeting at the administration office.

Junior Katherine Benter was presented a copy of her nomination letter written by the high school’s social studies department.

"Katherine’s dedication to make herself a better student shows every day in her approach to assigned tasks and the positive attitude she demonstrates in the classroom," Principal Joe Sheffer said in reading the teachers’ comments.

"Even with her extremely busy extracurricular schedule, Katherine has found the time to challenge herself academically by enrolling and excelling in numerous Advanced Placement and dual credit courses at BCHS," they wrote. "Katherine, thank you for serving as an excellent role model for our fellow students at BCHS."

Eighth-grader Lane Zike was recognized by middle school Principal Doug McClure. Zike was not able to be at the meeting because he was playing in a basketball game Monday night.

"He’s an absolute model student and a teacher’s pleasure to have in the classroom," McClure said in sharing the teachers’ comments. "He’s a responsible student with a tremendous work ethic, settling for nothing but his best effort. He shows a willingness to learn new concepts, and if there’s something he does not understand, he’s not afraid to ask questions and challenge his teachers to clarify the information."

The teachers said Zike displays time management skills by completing his assignments while playing a major role in the school’s football and basketball teams. He also is a research assistant and technology services volunteer in the library and is an active member of the Tribal Council.

"He takes his role seriously and isn’t afraid to offer suggestions, listen to others’ ideas and lend a hand," the teachers wrote. "Maybe the most important characteristic that sets Lane apart is his respectfulness for his teachers and his peers. He’s always willing to give a helping hand, whether it be running an errand for a teacher or showing a student how to work out a problem."

The teachers also said Zike always asks politely and says "thank you" when receiving a reply.

"All of these qualities make Lane Zike an outstanding student and a perfect choice for BCMS Brave of the Month recognition," they wrote. "Keep up the great work, Lane."
