After being one of the featured artists in Southern Indiana Center for the Arts’ popular October exhibit “Mellencamp: Three Generations of Art,” Speck Mellencamp is getting more involved in the local art scene.

The 24-year-old son of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and painter John Mellencamp plans to return to SICA in Seymour to teach two weeks of oil painting classes in February.

The classes will be conducted at the center from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday from Feb. 17 to Feb. 28. Located at 2001 N. Ewing St., the property is owned by John Mellencamp and leased to the center for $1 every two years.

Speck will be onsite from 5 to 9 p.m. each day to allow for one-on-one instruction with students and time for questions. He is a 2019 graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design.

The first week will be an introduction to oil painting and will cover basic techniques along with color theory through still life painting.

In the second week, students will implement the skills they’ve learned through self-portraiture. With help from Speck, students will create a self-portrait using a mirror and a proper studio portrait setup. Students will learn the fundamental use of light, space and color to become better artists.

Each class will begin with an instructor demonstration, followed by assisting students with their work. By the end of the week, students will have the basic skill set needed to allow them to bring new life into their work with confidence.

The cost for each weekly course is $300, which includes an easel. A materials list will be given to students upon enrollment.

Pre-registration and pre-payment will be required since class size is limited. This must be done prior to 5 p.m. Feb. 5. Register by visiting soinart.com.
