A Jackson County man was arrested Monday after fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle and on foot in Seymour.

Jeremy Michael Smith, 28, of Seymour faces two preliminary Level 6 felony charges of resisting law enforcement, a Class C misdemeanor of operating a vehicle without obtaining a license and a Class A misdemeanor of possession of stolen property.

He was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 12:14 p.m. Monday and was being held without bond pending his initial hearing.

The incident that led to his arrest started at 8:45 a.m. when Seymour Police Department received a call from a resident at Village Green Mobile Park on South O’Brien Street about the theft of their 2009 black Toyota Corolla.

The car had a GPS tracking device in it, so officers contacted the dealership from which the car was purchased to get location on it, police said.

An unrelated traffic stop, however, led to police finding and arresting Smith.

At 10:17 a.m., Jackson County Sheriff Deputy Brad Barker saw a suspicious vehicle on North County Road 600E that was traveling south near Hangman’s Crossing. The vehicle failed to use a turn signal when pulling into a driveway before turning around and traveling on east on U.S. 50, police said.

Barker said he followed the vehicle on U.S. 50, without his emergency lights on, until Smith abruptly stopped in the middle of the roadway.

Barker said he turned on his flashers and the vehicle pulled over. He then exited his vehicle after requesting backup.

Upon questioning, Smith gave a false name and said he didn’t have a driver’s license.

Barker then requested Smith hand over his keys, but the driver put the keys back in the ignition and floored it, police said.

Seymour officers then joined the pursuit as the vehicle continued to travel east on U.S. 50.

When the driver turned north on to O’Brien Street, both passenger tires on the Toyota popped after hitting a curb, police said.

Barker said the vehicle was traveling around 80 mph before the tires deflated.

Soon after, the driver of the vehicle parked in it a spot at Burkhart Crossing Apartments on Stoneridge Drive and fled on foot.

Barker said Smith tried to enter an apartment before he was caught.

He said he suffered minor cuts on his hands from the altercation.

Seymour officers Jim Handley, Gilbert Carpenter and Craig Owens, and county Officer Aaron Wilkins assisted with the arrest.

A Level 6 felony is punishable by six months to two and a half years if convicted with an advisory sentence of one year.

Class A misdemeanors can result in $5,000 in fines and one year in jail while Class C is punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.
