Special Olympics basketball teams wrapping up regular season

The basketball season rolls on for the Special Olympics Indiana Jackson County teams.

Competing in the Lawrence County Limestone Classic Basketball Tournament on Jan. 25 in Bedford, the Jackson County Tornadoes five-on-five team was defeated by the Vanderburgh County Bearcats 32-8. Thomas Emly scored four points, while Josh Beals and Tim Ashburn each had two.

Later, the Tornadoes lost 33-9 against the Vigo County Bandits to finish fourth in their division. Emly led with seven points, and Beals scored two.

The three-on-three portion of the tournament was Jan. 26.

The Jackson County Twisters won 20-0 over the Greene County Giants. Dale Hickman scored 14 points, Becky Klosterman had four and Roger Hanner had two. Later in the championship, the Twisters fell 20-8 against the Lawrence County Space Cowboys to finish runner-up in their division. Hickman scored six points, and Klosterman had two.

The Jackson County Hurricanes also won their opening game 20-0, defeating the Orange County Thunder. Dee Bennett led with eight points, Donald Bennethum had six, Kayla Kriete had four and Bill White two. They also fell in the championship and finished as runner-up in their division, as the Monroe County Bobcats won 20-10. Bennett scored all of the Hurricanes’ points in that game.

The Jackson County Tsunamis lost a couple of close games, 20-14 against the Lawrence County Space Rangers and 20-18 against the Monroe County Wildcats, and finished fourth in their division. In the first game, Averie Brennan led with 10 points, and Alysha Sandlin had four. Brennan also was the leading scorer in the consolation game, finishing with 16 points, and Sandlin scored two.

On Feb. 1, two of the three-on-three teams played the Greene County Giants at Seymour High School’s Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium. The Tsunamis won 21-2 with Brennan leading with eight points, followed by Sandlin with seven, Nevaeh Ackeret with four and Haley Ackeret with two. Then the Hurricanes defeated the Giants 20-10 with Bennett finishing with 16 points and Cheroki Isgrigg and Donald Bennethum each scoring two.

The Twisters also played Feb. 1, defeating the Hurricanes 20-8 and the Tsunamis 18-12.

On Saturday, Jackson County’s four teams will wrap up the regular season in the Shelby County Arnie Petre Memorial Tournament at Shelbyville High School.

The Tornadoes (1-4) will play the Monroe County Cutters at 9:45 a.m. and the Decatur County Jaguars at 4 p.m., while the Twisters (5-1) take on the Shelby County Dragons and Wayne County Hustling Hoosiers, the Tsunamis (3-3) face the Shelby County Warriors and Wayne County Hurrying Hoosiers and the Hurricanes (2-4) play the Ripley Ohio Dearborn County Chargers and Wayne County Hurrying Hoosiers. The three-on-three games start at 4 p.m.

The sectional is set for March 21 at Hauser High School in Hope.
