Swimming

Sabotin has strong showing at state prelims

Trinity Lutheran senior Rachel Sabotin returns to today’s IHSAA girls swimming state finals with a chance at two state titles. 

Sabotin moved up six spots, dropping more than a second, in the 100-yard butterfly and will be seeded third in today’s state championship heat. Her time 54.68 seconds tied her with Northridge junior Elsa Fretz.

In the 200 individual medley, Sabotin dropped .26 seconds to hold her fourth seed heading into today’s finals. Her time of 2 minutes and 2.70 seconds was just .04 seconds quicker than that of fifth place.

Rough start sinks Tigers

The host West Washington Senators outscored Crothersville 19-5 in the first quarter to build the needed cushion and then hung on for a 56-51 win. 

Crothresville battled in the second half to try and comeback from the early hole, outscoring the Senators by 10 in the final two periods, but were unable to complete the comeback. 

Josh Thomas led the charge for the Tigers with 20 points while Ethan Shirley added 12. Jaylen Walls scored seven, Cable Spall dropped six, Quinten Keasler had four and Carson Farmer added two.

CAI clamps down on Cougars

Christian Academy of Indiana used a 26-point first quarter to jump on top of Trinity Lutheran early and never looked back en route to a 77-56 victory.

Trinity Lutheran kept pace the rest of the way, but the early hole proved to be too much to climb out of for the Cougars.

Tyler Goecker led the way for the Cougars with 22 points, followed by Jack Marksberry’s 12. They were the only two Trinity players in double figures. Hudson Norton added nine, Mitchell Hackman tallied seven, Josh Rowe chipped in four and Caleb Williams netted two.

Medora falls to BLC

Bloomington Lighthouse Christian defeated Medora 63-44 Thursday night, giving the Hornets their 10th consecutive loss since their 46-45 overtime win over Columbus Christian.

The Hornets were down just three points after a quarter, but the Lions outscored them 17-7 in the second to build their cushion.

Isaiah Myers led the way for Medora with 13 points followed by Caleb Sturgill’s eight, Shepard Earl’s seven, Jayvin Spurgeon’s six, Bryce Guffey’s five and Braxton McCory’s three.

Special Olympics basketball teams compete in Shelbyville

The Jackson County Tsunamis won both of their basketball games Feb. 8 in the Shelby County Arnie Petre Memorial Tournament at Shelbyville High School.

They defeated Shelby County 20-10 and Wayne County 17-2. In the first game, Averie Brennan led with 10 points, Alysha Sandlin scored six and Nevaeh Ackeret had four. In the second game, Brennan led with 12, Sandlin had three and Elijah Noble had two.

Special Olympics Indiana Jackson County had two other three-on-three teams playing that day.

The Jackson County Twisters lost 20-10 against Wayne County and 20-8 to Shelby County. In the first game, Becky Klosterman and Dale Hickman both scored four points, and Eric Jackson had two. In the second game, Hickman scored six, and Jackson had two.

The Jackson County Hurricanes lost 20-8 against Ripley-Ohio-Dearborn and 20-6 against Wayne County. Cheroki Isgrigg, Kayla Kriete, Donald Bennethum and Dee Bennett each had two points in the first game, and Bennett scored all six points in the second one.

Also that day, the five-on-five Tornadoes lost against a higher-level Monroe County Cutters team 46-9. Thomas Emly led with five points, followed by Josh Beals and Tim Ashburn with two each. Later, they lost 38-6 against the Decatur County Jaguars. Emly scored four points, and Beals had two.

After each game, players and coaches from both teams came together to present the Arnie Petre Tradition Spirit and Sportsmanship Award. Jackson County had four winners: Ashburn, Klosterman, Sandlin and Montana Casto.

The tournament wrapped up the regular season for Jackson County’s four teams. Going into the sectional March 21 at Hauser High School in Hope, the Tsunamis and Twisters are both 5-3, the Hurricanes are 2-6 and the Tornadoes are 1-6.
