Reds rev up for short season

The Cincinnati Reds will begin the long-awaited start to the Major League season with a home game at the Great American Ball park July 24.

The latest opening game in team history will be against the Detroit Tigers at 6:10 p.m., which will begin a homestand as part of the truncated, 60-game season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cincinnati will host the Tigers Saturday and Sunday, July 25-25, and then play a four-game home series July 27-30 versus the Chicago Cubs before the Reds compete in their first road game.

Under the revised, short-verson Major League Baseball schedule, teams will play 40 of their games against intradivision clubs. and the other 20 regular-season games against teams in the companion other division, such as East vs. East and Central vs. Central.

A total of 10 interleague games is included within each team’s total, as well. The regular season will end Sept. 27 and during the July 23-end-of-September period, teams will have six off days, except for the small group of teams that open one day before the majority of clubs.

Baseball will also include the traditional Jackie Robinson day on its schedule. Typically, that occasion is celebrated across the sport on April 15. Teams will observe Jackie Robinson Day on Aug. 28.

MLB will also observe the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Negro Leagues on Aug. 16. Roberto Clemente Day will be celebrated on Sept. 9.
