New COVID testing clinic to open Tuesday

Schneck Medical Center and the Jackson County Health Department have partnered to provide free COVID-19 testing at a new offsite location.

The clinic will open Tuesday in the former Indiana State Police post at 721 E. Tipton St. in Seymour.

Hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. The site will be closed on Mondays and Sundays.

Patients do not have to be exhibiting any symptoms to be tested, as some people can have the virus and be asymptomatic.

Appointments may be scheduled online at scheduling.coronavirus.in.gov or patients can walk in and register onsite.

Dr. Eric Fish, president and chief executive officer of Schneck, said the clinic will allow more people to get tested and know their COVID status in a more timely fashion.

“We have partnered with the Jackson County Health Department to improve access to efficient, accurate testing and return test results more quickly,” he said.

The clinic is another way Schneck and the health department are working together to meet the medical needs of residents in Jackson County and surrounding areas.

“This partnership will help those in the communities we serve to keep themselves, their neighbors and their loved ones safe,” Fish said.

The existing Optum testing site currently located in the Schneck Professional Building will move to Brownstown beginning Oct. 1. That will be at the former town hall building at 200 W. Walnut St.

The town still owns the building, so town attorney Travis Thompson said the health department will have to review the contract and sign if it agrees to pay $1 per month to house the testing site there.

“They have to have their own insurance policy, personal property insurance. We take care of the building, and they hold us harmless from anything that happens there,” Thompson told the council during Tuesday night’s meeting.

Council President Gregg Goshorn said once the health department returns the contract, the council can approve it at the next meeting, set for 6 p.m. Sept. 21.
