Winter farmers market to be outdoors

Instead of moving indoors for the winter, the Seymour Area Farmers Market will continue to sell locally grown and made products outdoors in the Walnut Street Parking Lot through the spring.

It’s the same location the market is held during the regular summer season.

The winter market, now in its fourth year, will be set up from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. under the farmers market awning on the third Tuesday of the month beginning Tuesday and ending in April.

Carrie Smith, market committee chairwoman, said the decision to remain outdoors enhances the safety of the market during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the past, the winter farmers market has been held on the first floor of the Smith Law Services building at Chestnut and Second streets.

"Although there is plenty of space for all of our winter vendors to set up at the indoor location, social distancing would be difficult to maintain," Smith said.

To help customers limit the time they spend shopping at the market, Smith said the committee will be posting what products will be available at the market on the Seymour Area Farmers Market Facebook page.

On Tuesday, customers can purchase eggs, lettuce, spinach, kale and other microgreens, carrots, whole chickens, pastured lamb, pork, turkey, 100% grass-fed beef, popcorn, whole wheat flour, dog treats, face masks, candles and baked goods.

"Many customers that shop the market during the winter months know what they plan to pick up when they shop," Smith said. "We are going to post what items vendors will have at the market on our Facebook page a couple days beforehand so folks can get an idea of what will be available."

The market will continue to offer drive-thru service. Customers can enter the market on the south side of the parking lot near the handicap parking area and follow the signs to a greeter, who will take their order.

Vendors can register to set up at the winter farmers market season for $30.

Information and applications are available at the Seymour Chamber of Commerce, 105 S. Chestnut St., or on the chamber’s website at seymourchamber.com. Interested vendors also can contact Smith at [email protected] or Market Manager Jo Boehlke at [email protected].
