Owls tennis players earn all-conference honors

The Hoosier Hills Conference released its all-conference honors Tuesday afternoon for girls tennis, and Seymour had quite the representation on the list.

Brooke Schafstall and Sandy Cerino each earned all-HHC honors for their respective seasons. Schafstall played at one singles for the Owls, and Cerino played at two singles.

Each of them had very successful seasons, providing Seymour with numerous points in big-time matches.

Joining Schafstall and Cerino on the singles all-conference team were Amelia Meunier and Libby Banet from Floyd Central, Claire Meyer from New Albany and Reagan Brown from Jennings County.

Kirby Hill earned honorable mention at singles, as she played three singles for the Owls. Hill had a really strong close to the year, becoming an automatic point for Seymour down the stretch in some pivotal matches.

Hill was joined on the honorable mention list by Addie Scott (Jeffersonville), Natalie Saydera (New Albany), Lydia Kittrell (Jeffersonville), Tatum Brown (Jennings County) and Emily Duncan (Bedford North Lawrence).

Also earning honorable mention for the Owls were Mallory Moore and Avery Ragon in the doubles department. They were the one doubles team for Seymour all season long, and the two seniors had a stellar season in their final year.

The two all-conference teams in doubles were Lily Meyer and Layne Burke from New Albany and Isabella Stigall and Mallory Pride from BNL.

Liz Ertel and Sydney Carlson from Jennings County were the other honorable mention doubles team along with Moore and Ragon.

It was well-deserved recognition for a Seymour team that won 16 total matches this season, including winning the HHC title and the sectional championship.

Seymour advanced as far as the regional championship match before falling short to No. 4-ranked Columbus North.

Seymour concluded the season as one of the top teams in the state, finishing tied for second with Oldenburg Academy as the second-best team in District 8, only behind Columbus North.

Head coach Sharon Wood was pleased with how this season went for the Owls, and she’s excited for what the future holds.
