A Matter of Balance

Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater.

A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels and emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls.

This class is for anyone concerned about falls, interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength, those who have fallen in the past and people who have restricted activities because of falling concerns.

The evidence-based program can help individuals improve their quality of life and remain independent while reducing the fear of falling.

Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

Thrive Alliance and Mill Race Center will be leading A Matter of Balance from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday through July 1. The program is free.

Self-Management Program

This program is designed to provide skills and education to participants so they can learn to improve their lives while living with their chronic disease, such as diabetes, heart disease, chronic respiratory disease, etc.

Topics covered in this program include managing symptoms, healthy eating, medication management and usage, stress management, making informed treatment decisions, talking with your health care provider and goal setting.

This program is offered virtually via Zoom.

Bingocize

This evidence-based 10-week program combines a bingo-like game with exercise and health education.

The program has been shown to increase older adults’ functional fitness, health knowledge and social engagement in a variety of settings.

Bingocize is offered virtually via Zoom from 1 to 2 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday from July 12 to Sept. 20. There will be no class Sept. 6 due to Labor Day. Registration is required by July 9.
