MHMP Jackson Co. EMA
Comments 0 | Recommend 0MHMP
In the pursuance of compliance with the federally mandated Disaster Mitigation Act (DMA) of 2000, Jackson County has formed an alliance with the Polis Center of IUPUI to identify potential natural hazards and to produce a mitigation plan to address the issues. The ongoing efforts of the partnership will result in Multi Hazard Mitigation Plan (MHMP) which will seek to identify potential natural hazards for Jackson County and then establish a mitigation measure that is intended to reduce or eliminate the negative impact that a particular hazard may have on the locality. The Plan is unique in the fact that it utilizes state of the art FEMA modeling software to provide damage estimates, corresponding to a predetermined disaster scenario. The finished Plan is being review by the County and incorporated communities and then will be sent to FEMA for Federal approval. Once FEMA approval is received, the County will then be eligible for emergency relief funding in the event of a natural disaster. The County and communities will also be eligible for Federal funding to implement the mitigation measures defined in the plan to promote the effort to minimize the effects of a natural disaster.
One particular requirement of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 is that public involvement is required as part of the planning process. It is the purpose of this notification to inform and invite the residents of Jackson County to a meeting for public input on the Draft Plan. The meeting will be conducted at Jackson County Courthouse Annex, 220 E. Walnut Street, Brownstown, IN. The public may view the plan from August 30, 2007 till September 7, 2007. Copies for review may be obtained from the Jackson County Emergency Management Department. Each Multi Hazard Mitigation Plan is unique to each County; therefore contributions from area residents are critical to its success. For information, please contact: Duane Davis, 220 E. Walnut Street, Suite 101, Brownstown, IN, (812) 358-6110.
