Seymour bowlers split at Starlite; Trinity goes 0-2, JV wins 2, ties 2

Competing at their home bowling alley on Sunday, the Seymour boys and girls split matches, while the Trinity Lutheran varsity team was defeated in two.

It was the teams’ only regular-season match at Starlite Bowl, but they will play host to the Southeastern Indiana Conference meet on Jan. 17.

The Owls were defeated by Columbus North 11-9 before they edged South Ripley 11-9.

Lady Owls coach Robin Cummings said her team had a 9-0 lead in the first match before Bloomington North rallied for the 11-9 win. The girls, however, got revenge in the second match, topping Bloomington North 18-2.

Trinity Lutheran’s varsity team lost to South Ripley 16.5-3.5 and Madison 16-4. The junior varsity team tied with Seymour and Bloomington North and also defeated those two teams.

“The second match, we bowled a lot better,” Owls coach Rick Schuley said. “The first game of the second match, we picked up our spares, but didn’t pick up very many spares in the first game of the first match. We bowled well until the last couple frames or we probably would have been in that one.
“You have to count every frame or you’re not going to compete. I told them we’ve just got to close it out. You’ve got to bowl all 10 frames. You can’t think you can coast.”

Cody Burke had a 359 series in the first match, while Tyler Brown’s 387 was high in the second match. Zack Brown had the high game of the day for the Owls with a 234, and he had a 217 in the first match. Burke (210) and Tyler Brown (212) also made it into the 200s.

“Zack Brown, he just has to mentally get into the game, and he came out and shot really well today,” Schuley said. “Ethan Malone has been pretty solid across the board. He doesn’t go real high for us, but he’s usually pretty consistent. Tyler Brown was ill last week and came back this week and rolled real well, and Robbie Knoll stepped up today and had a good day.”

Knoll, who was second and third on the team respectively in each match, felt good about his bowling.

“That’s about average,” Knoll said. “I felt pretty good in the first set. I thought we could have won the first set if we would have shot better on picking up our spares, but we couldn’t convert on spares.”

Of the second match, Knoll said, “Coach told us to start picking up our spares, and we just capitalized on picking up our spares and brought it back.”

For Knoll, it was just good to compete at home.

“It felt amazing,” he said. “Being away two times, having a hard time at Bloomington and having a hard time at Madison, coming back here felt good.”

Amanda Creech led the Seymour girls, shooting a 305 and a 321 series. Autumn Boling had the team’s high game with a 164.

For Trinity Lutheran, Chaz Mathis once again led the team, rolling consistent games of 191, 195, 196 and 198 and having the high series in both matches with a 389 and a 391. Evan Behmlander was strong against Madison, going from a 240 in the first match to a 350 in the Madison match. His game of 187 was the Cougars’ second-best. Ashley Mathis followed with a high of 177.

“We were hopeful before our first match because it was our first at Starlite and also a bye, which meant that we would play against the median team (South Ripley) from the previous week,” Cougars coach Don Brown said. “Unfortunately, the median team shot one of the highest series of the day.
“Our second match was against the second-place team in our conference (Madison). They simply shot better.”

In JV action, Andrew Bloch (316) had the high series for Trinity in the win against Seymour, while Travis Schwipps (281) had the team’s best series in the tie with Seymour. Bloch and Ben Franke each had games of 168.

Chris Kelly (287) led Seymour in the first match and Logan Moore (250) took honors in the second match. Kelly’s top game was 149 and Moore’s was 141, both in the first match.

On Dec. 6, Seymour and Trinity Lutheran will travel to Pollard’s Bowl in Versailles.
