Thanksgiving meal and giveaway taking shape

Area churches will once again come together with volunteers to offer a community meal on Thanksgiving Day, and they need your help.

The Thanksgiving Day meal will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 26 at Cornerstone Ministry Center, 1088 Sarasota Drive in Seymour.

“The body of Christ in Jackson County invites you to the Thanksgiving Day meal and giveaway,” Becky VanAntwerp said. She’s one of the many volunteers organizing the event, which this year is being combined with Cornerstone’s annual giveaway of items such as clothing.

Area residents are invited to help themselves to men’s, women’s and children’s clothing as well as household goods, toys and a “great feast with turkey, dressing and all the fixings,” VanAntwerp said.

Homebound residents are asked to call the church office at 522-7804 by noon Nov. 24 to make arrangements for delivery.

The church is also seeking donations and volunteers to help carry out the event.

Last year, more than 1,000 people from throughout the county were fed at the Thanksgiving Day feast, including more than 400 meals that were delivered to the homes of people unable to make it to Cornerstone.

Helping prepare and serve those meals last year were more than 150 volunteers. Twelve other churches from the area joined in as well as Cornerstone.

A number of area businesses helped out last year, too, including Jay C Food Stores, Spring Hill Camp, Provisions Food Pantry and Cracker Barrel restaurant, Wal-Mart Supercenter and Wal-Mart Distribution and Transportation.

One way golfers can help contribute to this year’s meal is by participating in the Nov. 14 Gobblers for Golf event at Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour. Greens fees will be waived that day if you bring in a donation of a turkey weighing at least 10 pounds.
