Accused of conspiracy to commit theft at Kova office

BROWNSTOWN — Two Mitchell men were arrested in Jackson County early Wednesday morning on charges of conspiracy to commit theft.

The men, Donald Carter and Christopher Leatherman, both of Mitchell, were arrested after Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Officer Rick Meyer noticed a suspicious vehicle driving around in the Cortland area around 2:30 a.m., according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.

Meyer then observed the vehicle stop near the Kova Farm Supply on Indiana 258 and two subjects exited a dark Pontiac Sunfire. The Pontiac then continued to Cortland and was located by Trooper Matthew Powell of the Indiana State Police, the release stated.

The suspects on foot were not immediately located. A traffic stop was later conducted on the Pontiac on Indiana 258 just west of Kova and the arrests were made.

Assisting on the call were Dustin Steward, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Ian McPherson, K9 Koa and Craig Owens of Seymour Police Department, Brad Barker, Medora Police Department, John Reichenbacker, Brownstown Police Department, and Powell, Trooper Justin Butler and Trooper Raymond Hunt of the Indiana State Police.
