Basket nears $700
Comments 0Donations to the annual Christmas Basket Fund totaled $180 Tuesday, bringing this year’s donations so far to $685.
The fund, operated by American Legion Post 89, was established 64 years ago by veterans returning home from World War II.
It was originally started for those in need in Seymour, but was later expanded to include the rest of the county.
Chairman Larry Johnson said local individuals and families in need of assistance have until Dec. 15 to send an application explaining their situations to American Legion Post 89, Christmas Basket Fund, Post Office Box 566, Seymour, IN 47274.
Those wishing to donate to the fund, which raised nearly $15,500 in 2008, have a couple of options.
Donations, which come from individuals and families, service organizations, clubs, businesses and industries, may be left at The Tribune’s front desk or at National City Bank. Donors may contribute anonymously if they choose and may dedicate their donations to others.
Johnson eventually decides who will receive one of the $50 gift certificates redeemable at Jay C Food Stores. In years past, recipients received traditional baskets.
“My emphasis will be on those with dependent children,” Johnson said. “I feel everyone is probably deserving, but my focus will be on those with children.”
American Legion Treasurer Jim Slade said the fund generally purchases 200 gift cards from Jay C Food Stores initially.
“And then we have to go back and purchase at least 60 more,” Slade said.
In 2008, Johnson said he believes about 380 gift cards were distributed because Jay C Food Stores also donates to the program. In 2007, about 360 individuals and families received certificates, and 266 were served in 2006.
In 2007, donations to the fund totaled $13,585 while donations to the fund in 2006 totaled $11,012. The record amount for the fund is $16,500, given in 1999.
Tuesday’s donations:
In memory of love ones from Marvin and Linda Rumph, $25.
Merry Christmas from Mary Lou and Larry Park, $125.
In loving memory of our parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Keck and Mr. and Mrs. William Bergdoll, and brother, William E. Keck and sisters, Avonda Brown, and Wanda Salas, from Gerald A. and Barbara Keck, $30.
