Tax bills due by year's end

BROWNSTOWN — Jackson County property owners should have their property tax statements by now.

Now they just have to figure out how to pay them and do so by Dec. 31.

Statements were mailed late last week, and most Jackson County residents should have received their bills, county Treasurer Kathy Hohenstreiter said Tuesday morning.

“If they haven’t, there is probably an address issue, and they need to contact us,” Hohenstreiter said. The number for the clerk’s office is 358-6125.

People who pay their property taxes through escrow accounts tied to their mortgages received a statement like everyone else, but those are marked “not a bill.”

“They don’t need to do anything,” Hohenstreiter said.

There will be only one installment this year because of the delay, Hohenstreiter said.

“They can come in and pay it all at once or come in and pay a little at a time,” she added.

Property tax payers have several options when it comes to paying their bills.

The first is to visit the treasurer’s office in the courthouse.

They also may pay at The Peoples Bank branches in Brownstown, Crothersville or Seymour as well as State Bank of Medora or online at www.jackson-tax.net.

Partial payments may only be made at or mailed to the treasurer’s office. Payments made at the banks must be in full and accompanied by the entire tax payment coupon sheet.

Hohenstreiter said tax bills and comparison statements, printed by Worrell Printing Service out of Indianapolis, a division of Manatron, which provides the office with software, include a lot of information, but the most important can be found on line 5.

“That is how much they have to pay,” she said.

This year’s statements also include a comparison of what an owner’s tax bill was the past two years.
