A 25-year-old Campbellsburg woman accused of battering her 3-year-old child - for the second time within two years - was arrested Monday afternoon, police say.

Lacey Edwards turned herself in to Indiana State Police Detective Scott Stewart at the Washington County Jail in Salem at about 3 p.m. and faces a Class B felony charge of battery.

Stewart said on Jan. 19 he received information from the Washington County Department of Children Services about a 3-year-old child with a "severe" upper right leg injury at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville.

On Jan. 19, the child had been taken to Washington County Memorial Hospital by his father and Edwards. The child was later transferred to Kosair.

Police said Edwards told her husband, who had been sleeping upstairs when the child was injured, as well as police that the child had been playing on a toy vanity and fallen off, hurting his leg. Two other children in the home at the time were not hurt.

During an examination of the child, doctors reported noticing suspicious injuries including an unexplained right upper arm fracture and multiple facial and head contusions, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Stewart began an investigation that eventually led to the arrest of Edwards, who was convicted of battery on Feb. 15, 2007. That conviction stemmed from a case in which the same child, who was then 2 months old, suffered a skull fracture inflicted by Edwards.

Stewart worked with Washington County Prosecutor Dustin Houchin and was able to obtain enough information to receive an arrest warrant in the Jan. 19 case.

Edwards was booked into the Washington County Jail and is being held pending her initial court appearance.
