Man facing battery charges

A 41-year-old Medora man faces criminal charges in connection with an incident in which he is accused of pushing his girlfriend and a 5-year-old girl out of a stopped vehicle Tuesday in northwestern Jackson County, police say.

According to a report filed by Jackson County Reserve Officer Scott Davis, John E. Silvers of the 200 block of North County Road 975W faces two counts of domestic battery, battery on a child less than 14 years old and neglect of a dependent after the incident, reported at 9:18 p.m. Tuesday in the 5000 block of North County Road 650W.

Davis said the incident that led to Smith's arrest began when he and county Officer Rick Meyer responded to a report that Silvers had pushed his girlfriend and the girlfriend's 5-year-old relative out of a vehicle while it was stopped.

Davis said the woman and child, who suffered injuries during the incident, walked to a residence north of where they had been left, and the incident was reported to the sheriff's department. The child was treated at the scene and released to another family member, while Smith was treated and taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.

At the time of the incident, severe thunderstorms resulting in heavy rain, strong winds and hail was moving through the Jackson County area.

Smith was located at his residence and booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 10:19 p.m. Tuesday. He was being held on $10,005 bond Wednesday morning.
