Jennings County man held

A Jennings County man was taken into custody recently on charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon after officers were dispatched to a report of a man with a gun threatening his family, police say.

Steven C. McCoy, 32, of 7965 W. 600N, has been preliminarily charged with intimidation with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. Both are felony charges. Other charges may follow after officers discuss the incident with Jennings County Prosecutor Alan Marshall.

According to a news release from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office, Jennings County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a report of a man with a gun threatening his family in the 7900 West block of County Road 600N.

The individual was reportedly going between his home and other family members’ homes located within a small wooded area off County Road 600N. The suspect also told the Jennings County Dispatch Center that he would shoot any police officers who pulled up to the home, the press release said. The homes were located off the roadway and back a long lane.

The suspect had pulled the phone lines out of one of the homes, disabling phone service to his parents’ residence.

Additional sheriff’s officers were called out and assembled near the location. Also responding to the call was Indiana State Trooper Derek Simpson.

Officers approached the wooded area and secured the area around the homes, not sure where the armed individual was located, the news release stated. At one point, officers were able to observe the suspect step out of his parents’ home and then walk back inside a short time later.

At that point, officers secured the home where the suspect was and after a brief standoff the suspect came out of the home and was taken into custody. The suspect attempted to resist officers who approached but was handcuffed and taken into custody in front of the home. Officers recovered a .38 caliber revolver at the scene, police said.

McCoy was taken to the Jennings County Jail. Deputies Alan Ritchie and Mark Jeffries were the investigating officers on the incident.
